Golf Betting Odds Explained

There are several different types of golf bets offered by online sportsbooks. The most commonly offered bet is the one in which you bet on a single player to win the tournament. The odds for these bets are usually quite generous because it’s difficult to pick one player out of many to win the tournament.

In online golf betting, the greater the long shot, the greater the odds. For example, some unknown golfer might receive odds of 100/1 during a specific tournament. If you place a $10 bet on the golfer and he wins the tournament, you would win $1,000. The odds are so great because that golfer is highly unlikely to win the event. Big name golfers such as Tiger Woods may receive odds of just 7/1 because they have the greatest chances of winning the tournament.

Types of Golf Odds

Online golf sportsbooks typically list their odds in one of three formats. American odds are often used for heads-up matches and the other two types are used for most other types of golf bets. These quick explanations of golf odds will get you up and going in no time.

American Golf Odds – The Moneyline

The American odds system is the most popular in the United States but they can be found around the world. In the American odds system, each golfer is listed with a positive or negative number next to his name. These numbers show how much money you have to risk in order to win $100.

For example, let’s say you have Tiger Woods up against Phil Mickelson in a match-up bet. The odds might be listed something like this:

Tiger Woods -180
Phil Mickelson +120

What this means is that you’ll win $100 for every $180 you wager on Tiger Woods. He’s the favorite in this match-up so you have to risk more to win less. Phil Mickelson is the underdog so with him, you win $120 for every $100 you wager.

Fractional Golf Odds

These odds are most commonly used when you are picking an individual golfer to win a tournament. Fractional odds explain how you will profit on a successful wager relative to the original bet.

For example, if a bet on Tiger Woods for a tournament win pays 7/1, you will receive $700 in profit for every $100 you bet. Your original stake is paid back in addition to this – so when you win this bet, you will receive a total of $800.

Decimal Golf Odds

Decimal odds, also known as European odds, are extremely popular with non-US golf sportsbooks. Decimal odds are the easiest to understand because they tell you exactly how much money will be returned to you on a winning wager (including your original bet).

For example, imagine a golfer who is listed as having odds of 4.50. All you would have to do in this example is multiple your bet times the decimal odds to find out how much money you would win. If you bet $100 in this example and win, the sportsbook would return $450 ($100 x 4.5) to you for a net profit of $350.

Golf Odds for Major Championships
